Private law plays an important role in our society and governs many different aspects of our lives. It is also known as civil law which is described as the branch of law that deals with disputes between private individuals or entities.
Civil Law is a branch of Private Law, which studies the legal codes that govern the interactions and disputes between the individuals of a community. It doesn’t include criminal, military, or religious affairs. Civil Law deals with accidents, contracts, wills, properties, personal injury, and other similar legal issues.
Eligibility Criteria of Civil Law
1. As mentioned earlier, there is no undergraduate civil law course as such it is taught as a part of the LLB curriculum.
2. Civil law courses are available only at the postgraduate level. To be eligible to get an LLM degree in civil law course, one must possess an LLB degree from a recognized university.
3. Entrance examinations are held for admission into the master of law course.
4. One must pass those exams with the stipulated cut-off marks.
Admission Process
1. One cannot study civil law after class 12 as it is not offered in India in any undergraduate course.
2. The students have to enroll themselves in the LLB program. For the LLB course of 3 years, the candidates have to score a minimum of 45% marks in the class 10+2 examination from a recognized board.
3. For admission into the BA LLB course of 5 years, the criteria remain the same. However, there is a relaxation in the marks percentage for reserved category students.
Career after Civil & Private Law
A Civil Law curriculum includes classes in Property and Trusts, Commercial Negotiation and Mediation, Comparative Contract Law, Comparative Equality Law, Human Rights, Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Principles of the EU, Finance Law, Insolvency Law, Intellectual Property Law, etc.
A Civil and Private Law graduate can work as a solicitor who is hired to guard the interests of his or her clients. This field is financially rewarding, but it involves good research as well as interview skills.
A civil lawyer’s annual salary might range from Rs. 4-5 lakhs. However, pay is mostly determined by the number of years of experience and degree of education. Civil attorneys might earn between Rs.5 and Rs.20 lakhs per year in the private sector.
